Prothonotary Warbler, Kirtland’s Warbler, Little Gull, and Western Kingbird at Tawas Point State Park.

Join Michigan Audubon for the “Tally Rally,” following a keynote address from “Adventures with Birdman” videographer, Tim Barksdale. These late-afternoon activities begin at 4:00 pm at the Tawas Bay Beach Resort.

Tawas Point Birding Festival is underway!

The Thursday evening program to Tuttle Marsh yielded a suprise–a Purple Gallinule! Today’s weather is excellent, and for the first time this year, the Point is full of migratory birds.

Online, phone registration is now closed

Thank you to everyone who registered in advance for all 2010 Tawas Point Birding Festival and Michigan Audubon Annual Conference events. Registration via the online system and over the telephone is now concluded.

You can still register during any single day of the event, but please be aware that many programs will be full.

On-site registration is $20, plus fees for additional field trips, workshops, etc.

Questions about changing your registration or making payments will be handled at the festival site as of 9:00 am Thursday, May 13.

For all other inquiries regarding the festival, please make use of the festival website, or by calling 517-886-9144. The Michigan Audubon office will be closed on Friday, May 14.

We hope to see you at Tawas!

Shorebird guide author, Karlson, to speak at Michigan Audubon Annual Meeting

Kevin Karlson is an accomplished birder, professional tour leader and wildlife photographer who has published numerous articles on bird identification and natural history for an assortment of magazines, journals, calendars and CD/DVDs. A former photo editor for North American Birds, he currently writes the Birder’s ID column for Wild Bird Magazine. Kevin is a co-author of The Shorebird Guide (Houghton Mifflin Co. 2006) and just completed a new book for the Roger Tory Peterson Reference series at Houghton Mifflin Co. called Birding by Impression, which should be published in 2011. He also recently completed a photography book called The Birds of Cape May NJ, which celebrates the birds of this special location through the four seasons. It is due for release in September, 2010.

As the sole ornithologist for Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s DVD Birds of North America, Kevin prepared photos and wrote captions for over 2600 bird images, including over 800 of his own. He is a regular presence at numerous Bird and Nature festivals around North America, where he gives keynote presentations and workshops on bird identification and natural history, and leads field trips to a variety of locations. Kevin also leads a limited number of photography tours.

Kevin will give the keynote presentation at the Michigan Audubon Annual Meeting on Friday, May 14, at Wiltse’s Brew Pub in Oscoda.

Kevin will give a workshop on shorebird identification on Saturday, May 15, at Tawas Point State Park.
